A Bit of the History you’ll be keeping alive…touch the Middle Ages.

Some of the earliest known Glass comes from Roman Times. In Italy around 400AD, illustrating the expense of glass at the time, thin pieces of Alabaster were found to be mounted in frames, this must have given the impression of being inside an egg!

Glass, stained glass, has always been in the realm of the wealthy, others have always had to make the best of what is on offer. Few were and are, ever able to commit their resources towards their own commission. It is due to the privileged classes that our rich heritage in stained glass exists at all.

Of course, today, mass produced ‘painted’ windows are the type that are seen on some estates and in some modern houses. These are ok in their own way...they just don't give the clarity and sharpness that can be experienced when light travels through solid, stained glass.

The first ‘manual’ of the making of Stained Glass dates back to around 1100 AD (by Roger of Helmershausen). Since that time the technique has not changed:

The artist, in consultation with the buyer, agrees a design and price and the window is then fabricated…… using the age old skills of lead-craft merged with the keen eye that appreciates the subtleties of the beautiful medium of stained glass and the skilled hands of the glazier.
